Atkins Diet - How Does Atkins Diet Work & How It Benefits Your Health?

What Is Atkins Diet? Should You Try Atkins Diet?

The Atkins diet helps people to lose weight by restricting carbohydrates and controlling insulin levels. Dieters can eat as much fat and protein as needed.

American cardiologist Robert Atkins created this diet in the early 1970s. It has evolved over time and now encourages people to eat more high-fiber vegetables and exercise more than in the past.

What Is The Atkins Diet?

Dr.Atkins designed a diet to significantly reduce carbohydrate intake.

The Atkins diet has four basic principles:

• Lose weight

• Maintain weight loss

• Stay healthy

• Lay a permanent foundation for disease prevention

According to Dr. Atkins, the main reason for weight gain is the intake of refined carbohydrates.

How Does It Work?

  • When a person follows the Atkins diet, their body's metabolism changes from burning glucose or sugar to burning stored body fat. This change is called ketosis.
  • When the glucose level is low, the insulin level is low as well and ketosis occurs. In other words, when the glucose level is low, the body will switch to using stored fat and dietary fat for energy. In theory, this can help a person reduce body fat and weight.
  • Before a person eats, their glucose levels are very low, so their insulin levels are too very low. When that person eats, their glucose level will rise, and the body will produce more insulin to help it use glucose.
  • The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of carbohydrates from 0 to 100, depending on the speed to increase blood sugar content after consumption.
  • Refined carbohydrates contain high levels of glucose. These foods have a high GI score because their carbohydrates quickly enter the bloodstream, causing glucose spikes.

  • Other types of carbohydrates, such as beans, do not quickly or severely affect blood sugar levels. They have a low glycemic load and a low glycemic index score.
  • Net carbohydrates are total carbohydrates minus fiber and sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohol has little effect on blood sugar levels. According to Dr. Atkins, the best carbohydrates are those with a low blood sugar load.
  • Fruits and grains are high in carbohydrates, and people on the Atkins diet restrict them, especially in the early stages. However, these foods are also good sources of fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.
  • To make up for the lack of nutrient-dense foods, the Atkins diet encourages people to use vitamin and mineral supplements.

Using The Fat In The Body

Ketosis can occur through the dietary intake of the fewest carbohydrates. During ketosis, the body breaks down the fat stored in the cells to produce ketones. These ketones can be used by the body for energy.

The Atkins diet is a low-carbohydrate diet. Due to ketosis, the body burns more calories than other diets. It is a ketogenic diet, although compared to traditional ketogenic diets, protein intake is usually higher and fat content is lower.
